The Love Letters to Dayton is a bi-weekly series of talks given by local prominent figures, and cultural contributors at Lock 27 Brewing’s Dayton Taproom. Topics will include cultural, technological, and economic contributions to Dayton, Ohio.

Starting our our series on Thursday, September 8th will be “A Brief History of Alcohol in Ohio” by David Care.

This talk will discuss the history of Alcohol in Ohio in general, and specifically looking into the roots in Dayton. What did prohibition inspire? What did the founders of Dayton drink? Which of the historical Ohio beer and liquor brands made an impact culturally, economically, innovatively? Which brands survived? The state of liquor and beer making today. How many breweries operate in Dayton today? What was/is their economic and cultural impact?

A little bit about Care:

David Care is a recent West Coast transplant to Dayton, but he is a lifetime appreciator of arts and culture. Care began his writing career in 2001 as a rock music critic for the now defunct alt weekly City Life. He went on to cover A&E and hard news before becoming obsessed with food and food writing.

Care moved to Dayton in 2018 to seek better healthcare for his disabled Vietnam veteran father. After receiving excellent care at the Dayton VA, Care’s father nevertheless passed in late 2020.

But, as David says: “Dayton people took good care of me and my father. This city has been great to me and I am excited to give back with my skill sets as a professional appreciator of culture.

David Care started working as a Beer Advocate at Lock 27 in early 2022, and after sharing his love for the Gem City with co-workers and management, they came up with the idea of “Love Letters to Dayton,” as a speaker series.
